The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. on Koning Leopold III Square in Blankenberge. During the construction of an apartment building, a large bag of construction waste was hanging from a crane. However, the big bag was torn open near the fourth floor, causing the contents to fall down. The building materials ended up on a tram house.

The impact completely shattered the glass roof of the tram house. “It is a blessing in disguise that no one was in the tram shelter,” said commissioner Jan Maertens. One victim was hit by flying glass, but ultimately suffered only a minor cut.
