Another great opportunity for the Dutch team

The ball doesn’t want to go in yet. Gakpo passes well to Dumfries, who puts the ball back to Reijnders. However, the midfielder cannot manage to get the ball to head towards the goal: his commitment goes well over.

Grind, what an opportunity!

And there is Orange again. Van de Ven sends Gakpo deep, who has plenty of space on the right. He puts back well on Malen, who mows over the ball. The striker is once again out of focus, just like against Algeria last week.

And that is striking, being seen goal drive at AS Roma in recent months.

Summerville breaks through

Great work by Malen, who sent Summerville to the goal alone. However, the attacker plays the ball a little too far in front of him, causing the Uzbek goalkeeper to intervene.

No danger yet Orange

We are eight minutes away and the Dutch national team still waiting for the first moment to get close to the enemy target. The ball moves patiently.

Chance Uzbekistan

The first opportunity is for Uzbekistan. Midfielder Shukurov receives a falling ball at his feet and tries with a volley, but his shot goes wide.

First half kicked off

After a minute’s silence for the deceased Hans Jorritsma, the match started. Follow it live here!

The players are ready

The 22 basic players are in the corner of the field to walk on. There are no fans, so it’s a bit a dismal turnout.

Jurriën Timber is still there in New York. The injured defender is sitting in the stands. Here he walks with Nigel de Jong.

Koeman about Timber

“The last one or two days I had the feeling that it might ultimately be this decision. Because it wasn’t one hundred percent. Finally we got yesterday sat with Jurriën until lateand even this morning. Unfortunately, we have to make this decision,” he said on NOS.

“He’s not fit for a long time. and still has complaints. And that does not improve very quickly, so he will not be fit in the short term. Then you unfortunately make this decision.”

Line-up Orange

Ronald Koeman chooses these eleven names in the practice match against Uzbekistan. One change compared to the match against Algeria last week: Denzel Dumfries returns to the starting line-up after a suspension. He takes the place of Mats Wieffer.

Mourning bands

Before the match against Uzbekistan, the Dutch players and staff reflect on the death of the former team manager Hans Jorritsma. The Dutch players also wear mourning bands.

Geertruida in the selection

Timber’s injury means that Lutsharel Geertruida will still join the 26-man group. He was already on the standby list of national coach Ronald Koeman, together with Ian Maatsen. The 25-year-old former Feyenoord player played 28 matches last season Sunderland in the Premier League.

Fifth player to miss the World Cup

Jurriën Timber is the third Dutch international who has to put an end to his World Cup participation. Had to sooner Matthijs de Ligt, Stefan de Vrij, Xavi Simons and Jerdy Schouten already missed out on the tournament due to injuries.

Jurriën Timber misses the World Cup

A line through the World Cup for Timber. ‘The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to participate in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner. In consultation with the medical staff, it was therefore decided that Timber would play after the match against Uzbekistan will leave the preparation camp of the Dutch national team in New York‘, the KNVB said.

Timber was already struggling with an injury in the last weeks of the season and therefore missed many matches at Arsenal. In the Champions League final the former Ajax player made his return as a substitute. That seemed enough for the World Cup, but he has now had to withdraw.

Lutsharel Geertruida has been called up as a replacement.

KNVB only makes money if the Dutch team wins the world title

The KNVB is likely to lose at the Football World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. “If we become world champions, we earn 6 million dollars. If we come second, we will lose $2 million,” said director of professional football Marianne van Leeuwen during a meeting at the Dutch consulate in New York.

“If there is a different result, we will break even or make it 1 million euros loss. America is a very expensive country. When you see the prices of the hotels and the airline tickets. That’s really not normal. Fortunately, we are not dependent on money from FIFA and we do not come here to make a profit, but to win the tournament.”

This year, the KNVB, together with a number of associations, successfully approached FIFA. “It’s natural completely idiotic that you lose at a World Cup,” said chairman Frank Paauw on the eighteenth floor of a skyscraper around the corner from Times Square. “In the end, FIFA gave all participants an additional 2 million dollars. So it’s good that we raised the alarm.”

The elf according to our readers

More than 7,000 readers chose their ideal starting eleven for the practice match against Uzbekistan. If Ronald Koeman listens to it, it delivers two changes compared to the match against Algeria.

Denzel Dumfries was suspended against Algeria, but is back and gets 95 percent of the votes. He pushes Mats Wieffer to the bench. Jurrien Timber is narrowly preferred at the back to Jan Paul van Hecke (54 percent).

Our readers believe that Crysencio Summerville (75 percent of the votes) has made enough of an impression against the Algerians to earn a starting spot. Donyell Malen (75%) is preferred over all-time top scorer Memphis Depay (8%). Even Brian Brobbey (15%) received more votes.
