There are big concerns about VfL Wolfsburg’s midfielder Christian Eriksen: The Dane collapsed on the field in the friendly against the Ukrainians on Sunday. The Danish team doctor was now able to give the all-clear.
Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during an international match between the Danish national football team and Ukraine. In the 65th minute, the veteran from Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg suddenly went down.
Teammates immediately called the Danish team doctors and formed a screen around their captain. The spectators in Odense loudly shouted “Eriksen, Eriksen”. However, after initial treatment, the Wolfsburg professional was able to get up again and, to the applause of the spectators and players, walked on his own two feet to an ambulance that was driven onto the stadium grounds.
As the Danish association has now announced, the 34-year-old is “conscious”. Eriksen is “doing well under the circumstances”. The game was abandoned after the incident when the score was 2-1 for Denmark.
Morten Boesen, team doctor for the Danish team, was also able to give the all-clear: “Christian is doing well and was able to walk off the pitch on his own.” Eriksen was “not conscious for a short time,” but then they were able to talk to him again quickly. “He will now be examined carefully in hospital to find out what the cause was.” Boesen said: “He asked me to send greetings to all the players and say that he is doing well.”
Eriksen had to be resuscitated five years ago
Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s first game against Finland in Copenhagen during the 2021 European Championship. The midfielder still had to be resuscitated on the pitch.
He continued his career in 2022 after, among other things, a defibrillator (ICD) was inserted into his heart. Eriksen moved back to the Premier League, first to Brentford FC and then to Manchester United for three years.
Last summer he moved to VfL Wolfsburg shortly before the end of the transfer period. He played 34 competitive games for the Bundesliga relegated team.
