Germany’s best tennis player is making history. But he has to fight hard for it in the final – it will be dramatic.

He has reached his goal: Alexander Zverev is the Grand Slam winner. The world number three won the final of the French Open on Sunday afternoon in Paris with 6:1, 4.6, 6:4, 6:7 (5:7), 6:1 against the Italian Flavio Cobolli, making him the first German since Boris Becker in Melbourne 1996 to win one of the four major tournaments. What’s more: The Tokyo Olympic champion joined Becker (6 Grand Slams) and Michael Stich (1) as only the third German to celebrate at a men’s major since professional tennis began in 1968. Among women, Angelique Kerber last won a major trophy at Wimbledon in 2018.

In the fourth attempt – he lost all of his first three finals in New York 2020, Paris 2024 and Melbourne 2025 – it has now worked for the Hamburg resident. The match lasted 4:16 hours. In front of the celebrities like Pharrell Williams, Lenny Kravitz and Eric Cantona, Zverev started strong and dominated with his serve. After just 35 minutes he won set one – which also made grandma Natalia in the box excited. In the second round, however, the Hamburger’s concentration waned and Cobolli, cheered on by the audience, came back. Zverev’s body language was now bad, he repeatedly argued and shook his head.

In the third set it was a battle against one’s own nerves in which the favorite retained the upper hand. “Let’s go!” roared Zverev, who then had to physically fight hard in the fourth set and was briefly treated. But he stood up again, took his heart in both hands and won the Grand Slam title he so longed for.

The match can be read in the ticker.

Flavio Cobolli – Alexander Zverev 1:6, 6:4, 4:6, 7:6 (7:5), 1:6

5th set, 1:6, 6:4, 4:6, 7:6 (7:5), 1:6 – That’s where it happened. Alexander Zverev is Grand Slam winner! Cobolli shows nerves, a backhand longline lands in touch. He then makes a double fault – and Zverev has three championship points! The Italian can still defend the first one, but then he makes another mistake on the second one. Out of! Zverev sinks to the ground in tears and cannot believe it. What a Paris final it was.

5th set, 1:6, 6:4, 4:6, 7:6 (7:5), 1:5 – Zverev distributes the balls well and runs as little as possible. And Cobolli does him the favor of landing a forehand out of bounds. But he counters with a backhand pass, there is another round of applause. But the German follows up with a service winner. Makes it 40:15, Cobolli makes the next backhand mistake and now serves against defeat.
