From an evening four-day event that (partly) fell through to the verdict in the case surrounding the controversial art theft from the Drents Museum. In this article you can read what happened in the province this week.

Major military display on Monday in Drenthe. Defense is holding the largest army exercise of this year in the Netherlands. Hundreds of military vehicles are being moved to Germany.

1,500 soldiers from the brigade go to Germany to train there. Including General Remco van Ingen. “This exercise is unique to us,” he says. “Because the brigade as a whole will be participating in the exercises.” The entire brigade of 3,000 men may not be in Germany, but indirectly it is. “In a computer simulation, the entire brigade is deployed virtually.”

Bad luck for the runners of the evening four-day event on Tuesday. Due to thunderstorms, the first stage of the event is canceled in many places.

But don’t worry: the weather for the rest of the week is expected to improve, so runners will put on their walking shoes later in the week.

Too little and too slow, that is what the mayors think of the new damage proposal after the earthquake near Eleveld in March this year. According to the State Secretary’s proposal, the damage will be dealt with more quickly, but the mayors of the affected area, Assen, Midden-Drenthe and Aa and Hunze, do not agree with this.

“With the current arrangement, dealing with damage is not easier, but rather more complicated,” says Anno Wietze Hiemstra, mayor of Aa en Hunze, on behalf of the authorities.

In two years’ time, Drenthe will be the scene of one of the largest sporting events in the Netherlands: the Special Olympics. The event is for athletes with an intellectual disability.

According to Sport Drenthe, our province is ideally suited to organize a major sporting event. “With its nature and heritage, strong sports infrastructure and experience in organizing appealing events, Drenthe is a unique province to host an event that revolves around sport, fun and inclusion,” Sport Drenthe previously wrote.

It has been keeping our province busy for over a year: the art theft from the Drents Museum, in which Romanian art treasures were stolen.

The judge sentences the three main suspects to prison terms of 47 months. They were convicted of stealing the golden helmet of Cotofenesti and three golden bracelets.
