The last three Metallica concerts in Germany were a pretty bloody affair: No, there were no lacerations in the mosh pit – at least not to our knowledge – but the blood flowed elsewhere. Almost 10,000 fans were motivated to donate blood as part of a Metallica appeal.

“Bleeding Me”: Metallica wants your blood

“Bleeding Me” was the name of Metallica’s blood donation campaign, which took place in Frankfurt and Berlin in collaboration with the German Red Cross. The band stopped in these cities for three German tour stops: with a double concert on May 22nd and 24th in the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt and on May 30th in the Olympiastadion in Berlin. There the band set an audience record – over 94,000 concertgoers in the Olympic Stadium, more than ever before. The numbers broke all records, not only in the stadium, but also in the blood donation center.

Almost 10,000 donors in Germany

“Bleeding Me” – that’s also the name of a song by the successful metal band – and with this call, the Americans managed to lure numerous people to the needle. Anyone who bravely allowed their blood to be drawn received a limited edition T-shirt. This apparently convinced many German fans: almost 10,000 donated to the DKMS in the context of the campaign around Berlin and Frankfurt. Metallica thus managed to almost double the number of first-time donors in Germany.

The M72 tour continues – and with it the call for blood donations

Metallica continues to tour Europe with their M72 tour and is next thirsty for the blood of their Italian, Hungarian and British fans. Afterwards, please watch your head in the mosh pit – too much blood loss would certainly not be conducive to headbanging to your favorite song. Most fans shouldn’t have a problem with needles anyway, after all, sharp metal is their specialty. And who knows: Maybe one or two first-time donors will become repeat donors – because the feeling of having done something good is almost a better reward than a T-shirt.
