The third asylum protest in a row is so far going quietly in Apeldoorn. Most people left the roundabout at Laan van Maten after 8 p.m. The Market Square remained empty. The municipality received signals that people wanted to demonstrate there and banned them.

However, the Mobile Unit (ME) had to be involved again. Demonstrations were allowed again on Sunday evening until 8 p.m. against the arrival of an emergency shelter at the Waleweingaarde. There were about a hundred people at the roundabout.

A small group – mainly teenagers – stayed behind even after the deadline. An emergency order was then issued after 8:15 p.m. and dozens of officers cleared the roundabout. That happened for the third night in a row.

It was very quiet on the roundabout between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM. There were hardly any chants and no protest flags were placed on the roundabout. That happened on Friday and Saturday.

Market Square remains quiet

The municipality had received signals that people would also demonstrate on the Market Square tonight. At 6 p.m. a message appeared on the municipal website that this was not allowed. In the end the square remained empty.

During previous demonstrations, things became restless again after an evacuation. On Saturday evening, a group of demonstrators blocked the roundabout around 11 p.m. Then the riot police had to take action again. 26 people were arrested.

25 of them were given an area ban, says municipal spokesperson Arnoud van der Steen. They were therefore not allowed to enter the area around the roundabout on Sunday evening.

Despite the relative peace, a few people were arrested between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
