Alexander Blessin remains without a win in the eighth game in a row with FC St. Pauli. He has a clear opinion about a change of coach shortly before the end.
Despite the negative series and the threat of relegation with FC St. Pauli, coach Alexander Blessin is not thinking about resigning. “So I’m not going to give up the begging now. I stand by it and I’m convinced that we can do it together,” said the Hamburg coach after the 1:2 (0:2) against 1. FSV Mainz 05.
“I don’t believe now, and I would have been with Andreas a long time ago, that a change in position will make a difference,” said Blessin, referring to sports director Andreas Bornemann with his statement. In the past few weeks, Bornemann had also ruled out a change of coach.
In the duel against Mainz, the fans whistled at their neighborhood club, and Blessin was the focus. “If the fans think they have to take it out on me, then that’s OK,” he said. The 52-year-old saw individual mistakes as the main problem. “These very simple gifts that we give are killing us right now.”
The Hanseatic League have been waiting for a win for eight games and are in danger of missing out on relegation at the end of the season with similar performances. After the 32nd matchday, Hamburg slipped to second-to-last place in the table due to rival VfL Wolfsburg’s 1-1 draw at SC Freiburg. Both St. Pauli and Lower Saxony have 26 points. The bottom team from Heidenheim has 23 points. Given the tight table constellation, Blessin sees no reason to “bury your head in the sand”.
Next weekend St. Pauli will face third-placed RB Leipzig. On the last matchday there will be a direct duel between St. Pauli and Wolfsburg.
