The New Zealander from the Jaguar team made a sensational comeback from the eighth row to win in Germany ahead of the Nissan of outgoing champion Oliver Rowland and the Porsche of Pascal Wehrlein, once again leader of the Formula E world championship
There is the signature of Mitch Evans in the second race of the E-prix of Berlin of the Formula E world championship. After achieving success on the Miami circuit, the New Zealander of the team Jaguar Tcs (a partnership which, as announced by the driver on the eve of this event, will end at the end of the season, after ten years spent together) was repeated also in Germany, with the sensational comeback from 17th place on the grid thanks to an impeccable strategy and a bit of luck in the final part, when the brief entry into force of the Full Course Yellow he neutralized the run-up of his opponents who still had Attack Mode. Evans triumphed in the eighth round of the 12th season of the world championship series, preceding the Nissan of reigning champion Oliver Rowland, who started from the ninth row like him, and the Porsche of poleman Pascal Wehrlein, who with today’s results has regained the lead in the world championship given to Edorardo Mortara after round 7 yesterday.
Wehrlein on pole
—
Indeed, Sunday at Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport began under the best auspices Pascal Wehrleinauthor of pole position and therefore immediately capable of reducing the gap in the standings from Mortara from four to just one point. Next to him in the front row was the British Taylor Barnard, finally the author of a high note with his Ds Penske, while in the second row Nick Cassidy and Joel Eriksson took their places with the Envision. At the start Wehrlein maintained the lead, but within a few corners he was overtaken by both Bernard and the two Citroëns of Cassidy and the two-time champion Vergne, who started from the third row. Uncertainty at the start, however, for the reigning champion Oliver Rowlandwhose Nissan briefly stalled in the ninth row before recovering.
Great comeback by Evans
—
However, the group remained rather compact in the early stages, with the Mahindras of De Vries and Mortara soon entering the fight for the top places. On lap four there was contact between Cassidy and De Vries, with the latter having the worst of it and retiring shortly afterwards. Cassidy then collided with Eriksson’s Envision, finding himself having to return to the garage to replace the front wing and definitively compromising his race. There were also among the pilots to stand out in this phase Sebastien Buemi with the other Envision and Nato with the other Nissan. Zane Maloney with the Lola-Yamaha was the first rider to resort to Attack Mode, on lap 13, imitated two laps later by a Vergne who had fallen to the rear in the meantime. However, the bulk of the group waited until the 20th lap to resort to the extra power for the first time. The one who benefited the most was Mitch Evans, who found himself in the lead chased by the Nissans of Rowland and Nato. Behind them Vergne was the first to resort to the second Attack Mode.
Rowland and Wehrlein on the podium
—
The decisive phase of the race began on lap 30, when the bulk of the group resorted to the second activation. Wehrlein took the opportunity to catch up and overtake Evans, but the Jaguar driver immediately passed through the activation zone to respond properly. Evans regained the lead on lap 34, but behind him came Rowland at full speed, who in turn had boost residue. With three laps to go, a new twist arrived, with the entry into force of the regime Full Course Yellow for a contact between Da Costa’s Jaguar and his Porsche Nico Mullerrather in the shade today after yesterday’s victory. With the normal race regime restored with two laps still to go, Evans was impeccable in defending the lead and taking the first place under the checkered flag ahead of Rowland and Wehrlein.
changing of the guard in the world championship
—
Wehrlein then immediately returned to the top of the drivers’ standings with a 3-point advantage over Evans and 8 over Mortara. Evans thus strengthened his role as the most successful driver in Formula E reaching 16 victories. And this could prove to be the good year to achieve that title which, however, has always eluded him, precisely in the season of his farewell to the house of the jaguar. Rowland also certainly remains in the running to defend his title, still without a win this season, 18 points behind Wehrlein after also taking the extra point for the fastest lap in the race. The next round on the Formula E calendar consists of another double roundthat of Principality of Monacoscheduled for the weekend of May 16 and 17, 2026.
