RB Leipzig received a lot of criticism for a post on social media about soccer coach Marie-Louise Eta. This weekend Leipzig will play against Eta’s new club, Union Berlin, in the Bundesliga.

Union initially published a post on The text read: “Well, it’s not the fault of Leipzig itself – it’s a beautiful city…”.

The Saxons then responded with a collage that showed Eta with RB players and former coach Marco Rose. The text reads: “Your head coach not only thought the city was beautiful…”. The picture was also published on Instagram, but with a different text.

Leipzig refers to Eta’s own picture

In the comment columns, users then accused the people of Leipzig of sexism. The club rejected this. “Sexism has not an inch of space at RB Leipzig. We are very much looking forward to the return of Marie-Louise Eta, who spent time at RB Leipzig in 2022 and then documented her time at the club in a photo collage on social media.”said RB Leipzig upon request and explained: “We have now published this collage again – with a reference to their wonderful time in Leipzig and in response to a previous Union post.” The Bundesliga club did not respond to the text criticized by users.

Eta published the pictures on January 1, 2023 in her annual review on Instagram. The Saxon Bundesliga club also explained that women hold various management positions. Union did not want to comment on RB Leipzig’s X contribution. Both teams will meet in Leipzig on Friday. Union and RB have had a deep dislike for each other for years.

As part of her pro license training, Eta sat in on RB at the end of 2022 and looked over the shoulder of the then coach Rose. Eta’s husband Benjamin works as a coach for the Leipzig U20 women’s team.

Since her promotion as the first female head coach in the men’s Bundesliga, Eta has been confronted with sexist comments online.
