The WTA tournament in Berlin is once again filled with many top players this year. Serena Williams will also take part in the doubles competition after a four-year career break.
Small gifts deepen friendship. At least the organizers of the WTA 500 tennis tournament in Berlin act according to this premise and pamper the players with small daily gifts. In any case, Serena Williams was happy about her new, mint green coffee mug, which the organizers sent to her hotel room on Sunday morning (June 14, 2026).
Williams then shared her satisfaction with the world via social media. However, it is not known whether she wore a mint green one-piece suit for her first training session at the LTTC Rot-Weiß Berlin out of pure loyalty.
Against boredom
The fact is: the 44-year-old will play at the Steffi Graf Stadium on Tuesday. She is serious about her comeback in doubles. She will compete in the dog throat together with the Czech Karolina Muchova.
The previous week she was on the court together with 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko in the doubles competition at the Queens Club in London and both had survived the first round before Mboko had to withdraw injured.
Four years ago, Williams actually ended her unique career (23 Grand Slam victories in singles) after her second pregnancy. But then at some point the boredom set in: “I had nothing better to do, I was tired of sitting at home. My kids are out of school for the summer. So why not?”said Williams ahead of the tournament. For the first time in 18 years she will compete in Berlin again.
Top cast
But the American is just one of the many prominent women at this year’s edition in Berlin. Tournament director Markus Zoecke can field a variety of top players.
The world’s best players, including nine of the ten best players in the world, have come to Berlin. From Aryna Sabalenka (RUS) to Elena Rybakina (KAS) to Coca Gauff (USA) and Madison Keys (USA) are using the German lawn tournament to optimally prepare for Wimbledon (June 29th – July 12th). Only the Polish Iga Swiatek is missing.
Lys in the peloton
But German players also hit the dog’s throat. Eva Lys from Hamburg received a wildcard from the organizer.
Tamara Korpatsch, Milena Steinkamp, Ella Seidel and Noma Noha Akugue were already eliminated from qualifying in the first round. Tessa Johanna Brockmann made it to the second round of qualifying games.
