BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Against the backdrop of the energy and economic crisis, this year’s Petersberg Climate Dialogue with more than 30 countries begins on Tuesday in Berlin. Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) opens the two-day conference (at 10 a.m.) together with his colleagues from Turkey and Australia. The meeting is intended to prepare for the next UN climate summit in November in Antalya, Turkey.

The topic of the Berlin talks is, among other things, the gradual move away from fossil energies such as oil, coal and gas, the combustion of which, according to current science, contributes significantly to the overheating of the earth. Efforts to find an exit roadmap stalled at the recent UN climate conference in 2025 in Brazil. However, global oil and gas supply shortages are spurring debate about how dependence on oil and gas can be reduced and renewable energy expanded more quickly.

The highlight of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue will be discussions at the highest level on Wednesday with a speech by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). The climate dialogue has been organized by Germany since 2010 and complements the UN climate conferences. It initially took place on the Petersberg near Bonn, but now regularly in Berlin./vsr/DP/he
