Drake had a hand-made Sade sculpture almost three meters high – after two tattoos of the singer, this is the next proof of his admiration.
Drake makes no secret of his admiration for Sade: In addition to two tattoos of the soul icon on his back, he has now had a three-meter-high statue of the singer made. The sculpture was recently completed and is part of his ever-growing collection. It was created by the artist Rebecca Maria.
The creation
Maria made the sculpture by hand over six months using five different clays. It is visually based on the cover of the album “Love Deluxe”. The artist used both reference images on her cell phone and her own memory to create an interpretation that was as independent as possible. However, the creative process turned out to be challenging: the use of the five keys not only opened up creative possibilities, but also brought with it considerable technical problems.
The artist was particularly challenged by the weight of the materials and the question of stability. In an Instagram story, she described how at times she seriously doubted that she would even be able to complete the sculpture. “There were moments when I really didn’t know how to complete this sculpture – from the issues with the weight of the different clays I used to how to make sure the sculpture would stay up on its own,” she wrote there.
Nevertheless, she consciously stuck to an experimental approach and decided to make the work process as demanding as possible in order to test her own limits.
The work of Rebecca Maria
Rebecca Maria has made a name for herself in recent years with large-format, pop culture-influenced sculptures. Her works often take up iconic figures from the music scene and translate them into three-dimensional works of art with strong recognition value.
Back in 2024, she worked for Drake and made three small Dipset statues for him.
But the Canadian is not her only celebrity customer: For Lil Uzi Vert, she created a sculpture of Frank Ocean based on his album cover “Blonde”. A$AP Rocky is also one of her clients – she designed several chain sculptures for him.
Her works consistently move at the interface of music, fashion and fine art and reflect the visual aesthetics of modern pop culture.
Drake as an art collector
Drake has been known as a passionate collector for years. He has been collecting art specifically since around 2015 and owns, among other things, several “Companion” sculptures by KAWS, works by Andy Warhol and works by Takashi Murakami. The rapper also shows interest in classical art: his album cover for “6 God” is based on Albrecht Dürer’s “Praying Hands” from 1508.
The album cover shows two praying hands, modeled on the famous 16th century work. The Sade statue fits seamlessly into this overall picture.
