Against RB Leipzig, Lukas Ullrich had to leave the field early – and burst into tears. Now he speaks out about the incident.

Bundesliga professional Lukas Ullrich from Borussia Mönchengladbach commented on his tearful substitution in Saturday’s Bundesliga game against RB Leipzig (0-1). The 22-year-old wrote on Instagram on Sunday: “Yesterday was not my day. I have never experienced a performance like this in my career so far.”

Ullrich was substituted after 33 minutes in the game against Leipzig. The reason for this was not an injury, but rather his performance. He had big problems against his Leipzig opponent Yan Diomandé, who made him look bad time and time again. Gladbach coach Eugen Polanski therefore reacted and replaced Ullrich with the Swede Hugo Bolin. Ullrich cried after his substitution and was obviously very disappointed.

In his Instagram post, he was self-critical: “I know that I can do better, and even though my mistakes had no consequences, my performance really annoys me,” he wrote. “But in football and in life, mistakes are part of the game. What’s important is that you take responsibility, learn from it and get up again,” he said in a combative manner.

Ullrich thanked the fans, coaching staff, team, family and friends for the support he received. He concluded his post with the words: “I will continue to work hard and come back stronger. Together.”

Some of Ullrich’s teammates also spoke up under the post. Nico Elvedi posted two encouraging emojis. Haris Tabakovic wrote: “Forever onwards” and added a handshake emoji and a flame.
