What the Hell is Palworld?
For those new to the genre, Palworld combines elements of an open-world survival game with base building, crafting, and collectible creatures, drawing artistic parallels to titles like Pokémon, Digimon, or Temtem. However, in Palworld, these creatures don’t just look cute; they labor on assembly lines and, satirically, can wield firearms. This eclectic mix led to Palworld’s remarkable success during its Early Access launch in January 2024, where it attracted 25 million players—15 million of whom purchased the game on Steam within a month. At its peak, the game saw 2.1 million concurrent players on Steam, a unique triumph for such a title, developed by a small Japanese team called Pocketpair.
The contrast was striking when Nintendo and The Pokémon Company took legal action against the studio in September 2024, with the outcome, from a consumer perspective, being relatively mild thus far. Despite these hurdles, Palworld achieved its 1.0 release in July 2026, featuring significantly expanded story, progression, and content. Notably, Pocketpair maintained the same price, offering a limited-time 30% discount, making the game a fair 20 Euros on Steam. The full version introduced 72 new Pals, additional islands, and a revamped progression system. The community responded enthusiastically, with almost 900,000 players logging in for the update and 93% of recent Steam reviews being positive. Indeed, Palworld thrives and is well-loved.
Technical Foundation in a Nutshell
PCGH previously evaluated Palworld’s technical aspects during its Early Access launch two and a half years ago. Excluding content updates, little has changed, as the game utilizes Unreal Engine 5.1 as its main branch with DirectX 11 as the standard interface. Consequently, the underlying technology dates back to late 2022.
Notably, Palworld is not hardware-intensive and runs on nearly all gaming PCs from the last seven years, compatible with both Windows 10 and Linux. Performance drops are less of an issue in the open world compared to heavily developed bases where many Pals are working simultaneously.

Illuminate with Ray Tracing
Pocketpair employs Lumens’ software ray-tracing path for indirect lighting. However, advanced global Nanite technology is not implemented due to the game’s older foundation, which leads to simplified LOD stages for rocks, trees, and buildings. The issue isn’t solely with the underlying technology but rather its implementation. What was somewhat excusable during the Early Access period—such as view distance and visible vegetation pop-in—remains an issue in the 1.0 release.
Visual Style vs. Technical Execution
A harmonious graphic style is more critical than photorealism, and while Palworld’s comic look is engaging, the technical execution often undermines this coherence. Objects pop in noticeably, and details load inconsistently, leading to a visually jarring experience even in Ultra settings. Consequently, the game’s world sometimes appears pieced together rather than unified. Consoles seem to struggle even more with these issues.
The Early Access grace period has concluded, and the next steps involve addressing these visible technical shortcomings. With uneven far-view displays, rough LOD stages, and details continuously loading even at higher settings, the horizon appears riddled with compromises.
