After 1:2 against the DFB team

©IMAGO

Just a few hours after the 2-1 defeat against the German national team, World Cup participants Ghana parted ways with their coach Otto Addo “with immediate effect”. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced this on Tuesday night. We would like to thank Addo for his contribution and wish him all the best for the future, it said. A successor will be announced in due course.

Addo had been the head coach of the Black Stars for two years. In 22 games he achieved eight wins, five draws and nine defeats. He had already looked after the team as an interim coach in 2022, after previously being an assistant, and was also responsible at the World Cup in Qatar when Ghana was eliminated in the group stage. Before the defeat in Stuttgart, Ghana had lost 1:5 against Austria. There were already two bankruptcies before that. Ghana also missed qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter.

At the World Cup taking place in the USA, Canada and Mexico, the Black Stars will face England, Croatia and Panama in the group stage. Addo is the son of Ghanaian parents and grew up in Germany. The 50-year-old played in the Bundesliga for, among others, Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund. He now lives in Düsseldorf. Winfried Schäfer, as technical director, may also have been involved in the decision to leave.
