We see the royals in action every year during NLdoet, the largest volunteer action in the Netherlands, organized by the Oranje Fonds. Princess Beatrix also rolled up her sleeves last week. However, her dealings with the press that is always present are not very smooth, says reporter Rick Evers Weekend.

Good morning

Rick calls it a ‘little awkward’. “The media and the Oranje are simply not in the same boat. This became clear again when Princess Beatrix arrived at the petting zoo in Amsterdam-Zuidoost.”

He continues: “’Good morning!’ one of the colleagues shouted kindly when Beatrix walked from the car, straight towards the press battalion. There was no response. Wouldn’t she have heard her?”

‘It remained quiet’

Beatrix simply disses the press at such a moment, according to Rick. “‘Good morning!’ the photographer tried again when the princess was a little closer. It remained silent. We really are her natural enemy.”

Later in an animal stable, Beatrix also slammed the press. “When she walked in, tapping her stick, the animals fled to the back. ‘The press chased them away,’ Beatrix responded with a disappointed look.”

Donkey

And it didn’t stop there. Later, Beatrix stood by a tense donkey. “No doubt because of the hedge of photographers who were quite close. ‘I don’t like them either. But I’m not allowed to say it out loud,’ the princess laughed.”

The little sneers just kept coming, Rick concludes. “I just laugh about it. Just as I sometimes laughed about my dear grandmother when she was 88.”
