The young German biathlete Sydney Wüstling missed another podium finish at the Junior World Championships on Arber after her third place in the sprint. Nevertheless, the 17-year-old achieved the best result from the perspective of the German Ski Association (DSV).
On Friday afternoon, Sydney Wüstling was the only German biathlete to achieve a top ten placement in the 60 mass start at the Junior Women’s Biathlon World Championships on the Arber in the Bavarian Forest.
The young ski hunter came eighth when Ukrainian Oleksandra Merkushyna won. In the end they were 1:02 minutes behind. The two Latvian Estere Volfa and Elza Bleidele completed the podium – despite four shooting errors each. The new junior mass start world champion Merkushyna also missed three times.
German biathlon talent safe at the shooting range, but…
Wüstling, who showed the best result of all the top ten ski hunters at the shooting range with two errors together with the ninth-placed Italian Nayeli Mariotti Cavagnet, won the bronze medal in the sprint on Tuesday. Previously, she finished tenth in the individual and fifth in the mixed relay. Mixed partner Leni Dietersberger, as in the sprint, did not get past 30th place on Friday. With five errors she ruined a better result at the shooting range.
Things went a little better in the mass start for the German talent Johanna Lehnung, who ended up in eleventh place. Until the last shooting she was still on course for a podium, but in the fourth shooting two missed shots were ultimately too many. With a total of three errors, their gap was ultimately 1:32 minutes.
For the German juniors, the mass start at the home World Cup was even more sobering. 18-year-old Lukas Tannheimer finished the race on Friday morning in 23rd place as the best DSV representative. Once again, things didn’t go well for the DSV youngsters, especially at the shooting range.
