One thing is clear: for the national player, the season is over in Munich. And probably also in the Bundesliga, as Goretzka suggested.
It seemed as if the midfielder wanted to show that national coach Julian Nagelsmann rightly believes that he has an important role in the upcoming World Cup, even though he hasn’t played regularly at the club recently. Goretzka revealed on the Sky microphone that he was not surprised by Nagelsmann’s statements, which made waves last week. “After all, I played all the games in qualifying and made my contribution to participation in the World Cup. I know what Julian expects of me.”
He is proud to have fought his way back into the national team. He is also happy that their relationship has improved again because they already had a special connection during his time at FC Bayern. However, they did not agree on his non-nomination for the 2024 home European Championships.
What will happen next for Goretzka after the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada remains to be seen. What is clear is that the former Schalke player will no longer receive a new contract. After eight years, his time on Säbener Straße ends. After the game against Gladbach, Goretzka expressed a tendency as to where he could go next: “You could go as far as to say that I would be interested in going abroad,” said the 67-time German international. And further: “I would like to play really competitive football abroad again.”
The 31-year-old didn’t want to reveal whether he would be drawn to the warm south or perhaps to the English Premier League: “I won’t make my next stop dependent on the weather, but we’ll find something nice.” In the game against Mönchengladbach he was able to advertise on his own behalf.
