The German Football League (DFL) is expanding its team to “further develop the sports content”.

As the league association announced, Benjamin Schmedes from the top Danish club Bröndby IF will move to the DFL as sports director and member of the management team. In this role he will report directly to Managing Director Marc Lenz. This personnel change is taking place “as part of a strategic realignment of the DFL in the overall area of football”.

With a significant intensification of the further development of sports content and cooperation with the clubs, German professional football should be aligned “together for a successful sporting future”. “Benjamin Schmedes convinced us with his strong expertise, his perspective on German and international football and a clear view of the sporting priorities of the federal leagues and clubs,” said Lenz.

Schmedes will form the DFL management team, anchored below managing directors Lenz and Steffen Merkel, together with Jörg Degenhart (finance, IT and organization), Jürgen Paepke (legal) and Philip Sagioglou (communication and corporate development). He will get started as soon as all ongoing obligations with his current employer have been completed. In Bröndby, the 41-year-old was until recently Executive Football Director and on the management board.
