COLOGNE/BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – RTL has officially notified the planned takeover of Sky Deutschland to the European Commission. The company announced this. The registration begins the first check by the EU Commission as to whether the deal is unproblematic under competition law.
In the event of mergers, takeovers or changes of ownership of large companies in the European Economic Area, the European Commission examines whether there are competition concerns against it. RTL said in a statement that they wanted to continue to work constructively with the Brussels authorities. They are confident that they will receive competition approval and complete the transaction in the first half of 2026.
Extensive media bundling
RTL announced in the summer of 2025 that it wanted to take over the media group Sky Deutschland. RTL Germany boss Stephan Schmitter will then become managing director of the joint company.
Sky Deutschland is currently part of the US company Comcast. If the takeover takes place, the listed RTL Group (RTL) would combine a lot of free-to-air TV channels, pay channels and streaming portals in German-speaking countries – and also integrate magazines and audio./svv/DP/nas
