That number is slightly lower than in the previous municipal elections in 2022. Of the 6,726 municipal candidates, 1.5 percent do not live in the municipality in which they are participating. In the previous municipal elections this was 1.6 percent.
The percentage in North Holland is slightly lower than the national average. In the Netherlands, 1.9 percent of municipal council candidates do not live in the municipality in question. This is evident from an ANP analysis of the final candidate lists of the Electoral Council.
What stands out?
Diemen particularly stands out: in this municipality the largest percentage of candidates do not live in their own municipality, namely 5.1 percent. This means that 5 of the 98 candidates come from outside Diemen. Amsterdam and Hoorn follow with 3.7 and 3.5 percent.
Also striking: this year there are 13 candidates on the Hoorn electoral list who do not live in Hoorn, while this was only 6 in the previous elections. This means that Hoorn has seen the largest increase in the province in the number of candidates from outside the municipality. Koggenland and Diemen both follow with an increase of 3 candidates.
In twelve municipalities, including Enkhuizen, Laren, Bergen and Velsen, every candidate lives in their own municipality.
The municipalities of Wijdemeren and Hilversum are not participating at all this year to the elections. This is due to the upcoming merger of the two municipalities.
Candidates may stand for election in municipalities other than where they live, but if they are elected, it is expected that they will eventually be willing to settle in that municipality.
