The Nigerian scored the third goal in the 5-0 win over Real Betis in the quarter-finals.

There couldn’t have been a better start for Ademola Lookman in the Atletico Madrid shirt. The former Atalanta striker was immediately started by Diego Simeone in the Copa del Rey match against Betis Sevilla and responded in a match dominated by the Colchoneros, immediately leaving his mark on his debut day.

Goals and assists

Deployed in a 4-4-2 as a centre-left attacker paired with Griezmann, Lookman found the goal to make it 3-0 a few minutes before the end of the first half, completing a counterattack with a low right-footed shot to the near post after coming in from the left and missing two opponents. In the second half there was also an assist for Griezmann, who scored the poker goal, before leaving the field ten minutes from the end to make room for Obed Vargas, also making his debut after arriving from the Seattle Sounders.

Simeone, what an attack

With the arrival of Lookman, Atletico Madrid’s attacking department has further strengthened. Up until now Simeone had focused mainly on Sorloth and Julián Álvarez, but now there are four strikers available: Lookman, Griezmann, Sorloth and Álvarez. It remains to be seen how Cholo will manage rotations in the long term, especially considering the qualification for the Champions League playoffs and the possibility of alternating the attacking pair more often in the event of a prolonged European run.
