Ice hockey star Leon Draisaitl ended his goalless streak in the NHL and led the Edmonton Oilers to a comeback victory with a gala performance.
The German international’s team defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-3 after extra time after trailing 3-0. The Cologne player initiated the comeback with a goal at the beginning of the final third (42nd), and he set up the goals from Connor McDavid (57th) and Evan Bouchard (60th).
Draisaitl contributed nine assists in the last three matches, and shortly before the Olympic Games he ended his drought of four games without scoring his own goal. In overtime, Zach Hyman scored after 66 seconds for the third win in a row, keeping the Oilers firmly on course for the play-offs.
From a German perspective, John-Jason Peterka also scored a goal, but Utah Mammoth lost 4-5 to the Carolina Hurricanes in the last minute. Despite an assist, Moritz Seider lost 3-4 to the Washington Capitals with the Detroit Red Wings. Nico Sturm, on the other hand, was successful with the Minnesota Wild with a 4-1 win against the Calgary Flames, and German coach Marco Sturm also won with the Boston Bruins 6-3 against the Philadelphia Flyers.
