Berlin – For billions of years, the Moon has orbited Earth at an average distance of about 384,400 kilometers, shaping life on our planet in ways that many may not realize. On International Moon Day, which commemorates the first manned Moon landing in 1969 every July 20th, we take a scientific look at the question: What if the Moon suddenly disappeared?

The answer from NASA is clear: Earth would become a completely different world. Some consequences would be immediately noticeable, like darker nights or significantly weaker tides. Others, such as alterations in the stability of Earth’s axis or its rotation, would unfold over longer or even extremely prolonged timescales.

Stabilizing Earth’s Axis

The Moon is our planet’s only natural satellite. Though no life exists on the Moon due to its lack of a substantial atmosphere, it plays a critical role in sustaining life on Earth.

The Moon’s gravitational pull acts like a stabilizer for Earth’s axis, which is currently tilted at about 23.5 degrees relative to its orbit around the Sun. This tilt is responsible for the seasonal variations we experience in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Seasons Disrupted Without the Moon

If the Moon were to vanish, the inclination of Earth’s axis would be significantly less stable. According to calculations from the Royal Museums Greenwich, it could exhibit extreme fluctuations.

In a worst-case scenario, the axis could stand nearly vertical, resulting in minimal seasonal differences. Conversely, if it tilted more sharply, certain regions could face drastically hotter summers, harsher winters, or even ice ages.

Weakening of Tides

The Moon serves as the primary driver of tides. Its gravitational influence causes most of the ebb and flow in oceans. “The Sun also affects the tides, but its impact is only about half as strong as that of the Moon,” explains Martin Knapmeyer from the German Aerospace Center DLR.

Without the Moon, tidal movements would reduce significantly. Coastal ecosystems reliant on these regular changes would experience fundamental shifts. Species like clams, starfish, snails, and various crustaceans might lose their habitats.

Since tides also influence ocean currents that distribute heat around the globe, regional temperature variations could become more pronounced.

Longer Days Ahead

The Moon affects Earth in another significant way. Over billions of years, its gravitational force has gradually slowed Earth’s rotation, from just a few hours per day to roughly 24 hours.

“If we were to suddenly remove the Moon, this braking effect would cease—but there would be no force to speed up the Earth’s rotation,” Knapmeyer clarifies.

Initially, the length of the day would remain the same, but eventually, the Sun would continue to slow the Earth down—until, billions of years from now, it could face the Sun with the same side, much like the Moon does now.

Darker Nights Without Moonlight

The animal kingdom would feel the impact of a Moon’s disappearance almost immediately. Many nocturnal species rely on moonlight for navigation, as well as for hunting and reproduction, governed by lunar phases.

Without the Moon, nights would be significantly darker. Some predators might find it more challenging to locate prey, while other species could benefit from the extra darkness. Such changes could drastically alter existing ecosystems.
