Sony may give buyers in certain regions yet another reason to mourn the decline of physical games. The company has informed customers in Latin America that prices in the PlayStation Store will change on August 20. The shift to local currencies could potentially lead to higher prices for the PS5 version of GTA 6 and other digital titles.
Different Currency, Worse Deals?
Previously, the PlayStation Store listed prices in countries like Mexico and Honduras in US dollars. Responding to consumer advocacy concerns, the prices are set to become easier to understand. However, the proposed exchange rates are anything but favorable.
In Mexico, for instance, stored credit will be converted at a rate of 20.50 Mexican pesos per US dollar, while the average exchange rate sits at 17.50 pesos per dollar. This discrepancy could make digital games more expensive overall. It’s possible that Sony has already incorporated sales tax into the payment process, which could balance out the difference.
Players worldwide are calling for dynamic pricing models in the PlayStation Store. Unlike Steam, Sony’s platform often overlooks the lower purchasing power of Latin American customers. Although personalized discounts have recently appeared, they are not universally applicable. The upcoming changes are unlikely to alleviate the financial burden that many affected customers will face.
The Continued Appeal of Physical Games
Regardless of the exact pricing, physical games are set to remain popular. Sony’s marketplace is less dominant in many regions compared to North America. Even though Rockstar is adopting the “code in box” format for the title, retailers are vying for pre-orders. As seen in France, physical PS5 versions of GTA 6 are already being offered at lower prices.
For fans who prefer a digital edition, pre-ordering before August 20 may be worthwhile. However, GTA 6 won’t release until November 19. Given the series’ immense popularity in Latin America, some fans may still be willing to pay a premium.
Brazil is unaffected by the PlayStation Store changes since prices are already listed in local currency. A survey conducted even before Rockstar confirmed any lower pricing revealed that 33% of players would pre-order the Standard Edition for $100.
