Little by little, Finnish homes and dining tables have been infiltrated by fresh berries sold in stores all year round.
Blueberries have almost imperceptibly become a part of everyday eating for many Finns.
Kesko’s director of purchasing and sales of fruits and vegetables Kenneth Forsman confirm this.
According to him, in the berry category, bush blueberries in particular have been on the rise for a long time. Its sales volumes increased by almost 30 percent from October 2024 to September 2025.
– In our view, bush blueberries have become a genuine mainstream product, the demand for which is developing steadily and is currently high even in everyday shopping, not just around the holidays, as maybe in the past, Forsman tells Iltalehte.
There can be several reasons for the growth, but Forsman thinks that the new nutritional recommendations have activated consumers towards a healthier, more plant-based diet.

K-grocery stores have bush blueberries in their selection all year round. Purchasing and sales manager responsible for Kesko’s fruits and berries Nanette Karttunen says that the country of origin varies throughout the year as the harvest seasons change.
The Finnish season runs from July to September, the European season (e.g. Spain, Portugal, Holland, Belgium, Poland) from spring to autumn, while the winter season is the harvest season in, for example, South Africa, Peru, Chile and Morocco.
Also in Lidl, bush blueberries are constantly on sale.
Lidl selection manager Ville Oinonen says, it has established itself as the most popular foreign berry all year round. However, Lidl has not seen any significant changes in the sale of bush blueberries in the last year compared to the previous year.
– We get the berries from where the season is best. In winter, mainly from Peru and Chile, in spring and summer from Europe (Spain, Germany, Poland, Serbia). In the summer, we also sell domestic blueberries as soon as they are available. Bush blueberries always travel to us by land or sea, because in 2023 we stopped selling fruits and vegetables brought by air, Oinonen answers to Iltalehti.
According to him, the most popular among customers are the larger package sizes.
Sales manager of the S group supermarket Laura Malin says that the consumption of fruits and vegetables has generally increased during the past year.
– The popularity of bush blueberries has also increased over the past year, and the sales volume has increased by more than 15 percent.
The country of origin of the bush blueberries sold in the S group varies depending on where the harvest season is at its best. In bush blueberries, the medium package sizes sell the most.
It’s not about any ultra-cheap berry. The price of bush blueberries varies from about 11 euros to about 19 euros per kilo. The price of organic bush blueberries is a good 30 euros per kilo.
