The Spanish singer Julio Iglesias was involved in a strong public and judicial controversy based on complaints of alleged sexual assaults, harassment and abuse of power that occurred within the framework of labor relations. The accusations, which refer to events that occurred in 2021, generated international repercussions and led to the opening of proceedings by the Spanish justice system.
The accusations were made by a domestic service worker and a physiotherapist who would have provided tasks for Iglesias in 2021, in residences located in the Caribbean. According to their testimonies, they reported repeated situations of harassment, non-consensual touching, and a work environment marked by control, intimidation, and power inequality.
According to the stories spread, the women also claimed that the singer had imposed conditions on them that they considered abusive, such as the requirement to take HIV and pregnancy tests as a requirement to continue working. Both agreed that these practices were not common or justifiable within a normal employment relationship.
The complaints also describe long hours, isolation, restrictions on communication and economic dependency that, they maintain, would have been used to exert pressure. The testimonies are part of journalistic investigations that compile direct statements and documentation provided by the complainants.
Following the formal presentation of the accusations, the Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court of Spain began proceedings to analyze the case and determine whether it is appropriate to move forward with a criminal investigation, taking into account that the reported events would have occurred outside Spanish territory.
So far, Julio Iglesias has not made extensive public statements about the accusations. The case generated a wide debate in public opinion, between those who demand an exhaustive investigation and those who emphasize the need to respect the presumption of innocence, in a context of high media exposure.
