From the snack bar in Emmen to the theater in Shanghai. Cafeteria boss Michael Schimmel temporarily exchanged his cooking apron for a three-piece suit and went on tour through China with a symphony orchestra.

“This was really a dream come true,” says the Emmen resident as he mixes up freshly baked fries in a large bowl. Schimmel has just returned from China, but is now back in his snack bar in the Bargeres district. “It’s here again business as usual”he says laughing.

The Emmen native, who has been playing the trombone since he was 12, was given the opportunity to audition for the tour last year. He got the place, rehearsed a number of times with the orchestra and left for China at the end of December.

“This was truly a childhood dream come true,” he explains. During the trip, Michael got a taste of the life of a world musician, something he used to dream of. “You are a professional musician for ten days. You are taken everywhere by bus and you see all kinds of things along the way.”

Schimmel couldn’t believe it. “Everything in China is ‘over the top’. We played in ‘state of the art’ theater halls. In the Netherlands you play in theaters for about 500 people, but there you play for a few thousand spectators. That is really great to experience as a musician.”
