Alexandra Popp’s contract in Wolfsburg expires in the summer. She currently sees three options for the time after that.
Former DFB captain Alexandra Popp has left her footballing future open, but in an interview with “Kicker” she also flirted with a move to Borussia Dortmund in the near future. Joining the third-tier regional league team is “still in the back of my mind,” explained Popp, who is under contract with VfL Wolfsburg until the summer.
“I make no secret of that,” explained Popp, who is in second place on the top scorer list in the current Bundesliga season with ten goals in 13 games. But: “It is difficult to say whether this year would be the right time.”
In addition to BVB, she also keeps other options open. “It could be that I stay in Wolfsburg. But it could also be that I play somewhere else after this season or don’t play at all,” said the 34-year-old. She has already had discussions about her future with Wolfsburg’s sporting director Ralf Kellermann.
Physically she feels good, but at the same time she emphasized: “But there are also phases in which I ask myself whether I really want to continue,” said Popp, who, in addition to stubborn heel problems, also suffered from cartilage injuries in her knee during her career. Again, “there are also times when I really enjoy it. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions.”
The Bundesliga top scorer in the 2022/23 season has been under contract with Wolfsburg since 2012 and has won the championship seven times and the Champions League twice during this time. In October 2024 she ended her career in the German national team.
