Having been with the club since 2018, Christian Mathenia is the longest-serving professional in the 1. FC Nürnberg squad. And his time with the second division team continues. As the club announced, the 33-year-old goalkeeper’s contract has been extended until the summer of 2028. He will then work as a goalkeeping coach in the youth sector.
“Chris has internalized the DNA of the club like no other and lives it. He pushes the boys on and off the pitch – is a contact person, advisor and a role model. We are very happy that he will continue to stay with us in sport and will also make his way with us in the club’s young ranks,” said sports director Joti Chatzialexiou about the veteran, who is one of the most loyal players in the 2nd Bundesliga.
Mathenia, who has been between the posts 158 times for the Franconians so far, but has had to give way to Jan Reichert since 2024/25, explained: “The club with all its emotions has been a huge part of me for so many years. I am all the prouder that we have once again agreed that I will stay with the club for a few more years. First of all, I am looking forward to the many more games and units before I will take the first steps as a goalkeeping coach. Also I’m already looking forward to this section with great anticipation.” He played one game this season in the DFB Cup.
