And further: “The most interesting coaching position, however, could be a return to another former club in Liverpool, which would further increase the pressure on Arne Slot.”
Liverpool would have liked to present Alonso as Klopp’s successor as early as 2024. But he was still tied to Leverkusen. Alonso, even while working for Real, made no secret of the fact that he would like to join the club with which he won the Champions League as a player: “That’s certainly something I (…) would consider,” said the then coach of the Royals a month ago about a possible return to Liverpool FC: “You never know what the future holds.” As if he had a premonition that his time at Real could be over quicker than many thought.
Whether Liverpool, United or City – these are just a few top clubs where opportunities could open up for the new season. And Alonso’s name will certainly be one of the first to be mentioned as soon as one of the positions becomes vacant. Despite his hasty resignation from the Royals, the Spaniard remains interesting for many top clubs.
Bayer Leverkusen’s bosses would certainly be serious about a return if the performances under Kasper Hjulmand left something to be desired, as they did in the 4-1 defeat against Stuttgart. Only FC Bayern, which was one of Alonso’s interested parties last year, will probably no longer be an option any time soon. Otherwise, many doors are open to the Basque.
The crucial question, however, is: What does Alonso want? Certainly first come to terms with the end of the club he loves. In any case, it seems extremely unlikely that he will sign with a new club this season.
