The case of the forgotten Olympians, which emerged in an interview with the Gazzetta, becomes political. The League and the Ministry of Sport ask the Milano-Cortina Foundation and Coni for explanations

The case of the forgotten Olympians, which exploded thanks to an interview with the gold medalist of the Lillehammer ’94 Games Silvio Fauner in the Gazzetta, also scandalized the Government. In a statement, the League harshly attacked the choices of the Milano Cortina Foundation and Coni: “The choice of the torch bearers, which did not foresee the overall involvement of the myths of sport, is incomprehensible and disconcerting. Also because it was not in any way concerted with the ministry of Matteo Salvini who spent more than anyone else on the organization of the Games. Furthermore, in addition to being a member of the government, Salvini also wanted Milan-Cortina with great determination as leader of the party, just think of the exceptional push of local administrators starting from the regional presidents. The hope is that a solution will be found as soon as possible”.

what criteria

The Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, says he is taken aback: “In light of what has emerged, I have already asked Milan Cortina and CONI for information to understand what the selection criteria were. In principle it is clear that the legends of sport, those who have made history, should be held in absolute and very high regard. I too was a little taken aback objectively, because faced with a wonderful phenomenon like that of the torch among 10,001 torchbearers I believe that the audience of Olympians should have been at the forefront, precisely because of the testimony they have given in sporting activity and that many still continue to give generously by going around Italy, in schools, at events, to testify to the values of sport. This is the Torch Tour which represents the values of the Olympic Fire that people must put into practice with words but above all with deeds.
