Mark Ruffalo, Ariana Grande and more stars wore pins at the Golden Globes in protest against immigration authorities following the Renee Good case.

On January 11, 2026, the film industry gathered in Los Angeles for the Golden Globe Awards. In addition to the honors, there were also political statements during the event. Some stars caused a stir with anti-ICE pins.

Clear message at the award ceremony

A handful of stars used the Golden Globe Gala for political positioning. These were black and white pins that made an anti-ICE statement against immigration authorities with slogans like “Be Good” and “ICE Out.” This specifically referred to an incident that occurred on January 7, 2026 in the city of Minneapolis. US citizen Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE officer behind her wheel. What actually happened: ICE officials initiated a vehicle check and asked the 37-year-old to get out of the car. She did not comply with the request, but instead reversed the car and tried to pass the police at a slow pace. Without hesitation, one of the officers fired several shots, ultimately killing Renee Nicole.

The incident surrounding Renee Good caused protests across the country, with demonstrators and ICE officers clashing, particularly in Minneapolis.

Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes and Natasha Lyonne wore the pins during their appearance on the red carpet before the ceremony started. Ariana Grande and Jean Smart also appeared in the hall with these during the gala. The latter also wore the button during her acceptance speech for the award for best actress in a musical or comedy series.

“We need our artists”

Nelini Stamp from the organization “Working Families Power”, one of the organizers of the anti-ICE pins, also commented on the topic. “We need the voice of all parts of civil society, of society,” she said in a statement. She continued: “We need our artists. We need our entertainers. We need people who reflect society,” AP quoted her as saying.

Grassroots movement at Golden Globe parties

The idea for the pin campaign was brought to life by Jess Morales Rocketto, the executive director of a Latino advocacy group called Maremoto, alongside Nelini Stamp. She already has activist experience – this year’s campaign is her third. The two organizers contacted numerous celebrities and influencers in order to convey the campaign to better-known actors in their circles and ultimately place it at the ceremony.

“There is a long tradition of artists advocating for justice in certain moments,” Stamp said. “We will continue this tradition.” So they had the pins distributed at events and parties.

The two organizers also announced that they would continue their campaign for the rest of the awards season, as “AP” reported. There has not yet been a reaction from the immigration authorities or President Donald Trump.

Winners of the evening

In addition to political statements, it was of course also about the award winners of the evening. “One Battle After Another”, which deals with left-wing activism and thus also had a political note, won the most prizes. Timothée Chalamet also took home his second prize in the current awards season.

Here is an overview of the most important winners:
