Club announces punishment
Ex-national player freaks out – and attacks teammates

A strange scene occurs in a test match. A player attacks his teammate in the middle of the game. It is not unknown.
Former Bundesliga player Kevin Behrens caused a stir with a freak out. The current player of the Swiss club FC Lugano pushed and insulted his teammate Georgios Koutsias on Friday morning during a friendly match against Viktoria Plzen.
The incident, which was shown in the live stream, shows Behrens pushing Koutsias to the ground during his team’s counterattack for no apparent reason and clearly audibly calling him a “little freak”.
FC Lugano condemned the player’s behavior and stated that the incident was being dealt with internally and possible disciplinary measures were being examined.
Behrens has already attracted negative attention in the past: In autumn 2024, he refused to sign a rainbow jersey during a VfL Wolfsburg marketing campaign and made homophobic comments. “I won’t sign such gay shit,” Behrens is said to have said. The professional later apologized after consulting with the club, which punished him with a penalty.
It is still unclear how FC Lugano will sanction its player. Behrens himself has not yet commented on the recent incident. The 34-year-old has been playing for the Swiss club since summer 2025. Things once went better for the attacker at Union Berlin (2021-24), and in October 2023 he was nominated for the DFB team by national coach Julian Nagelsmann. Behrens played his only international game in the 2-2 draw against Mexico, coming on as a substitute in the 87th minute.
