Led by the strong Federico Valverde, Real Madrid followed FC Barcelona into the final of the Spanish Supercopa. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team won an exciting semi-final in Jeddah/Saudi Arabia against city rivals Atletico Madrid 2-1 (1-0) – because Valverde (2nd) scored beautifully and set up Rodrygo (55th) to make it 2-0.

Alexander Sörloth (58th) only shortened the score. The final will also take place in Jeddah on Sunday evening (8 p.m./DAZN). Real has the chance for revenge against Hansi Flick’s Barcelona: last year the Catalans won the final 5-2.

Against Atletico, Valverde shot a free kick from more than 25 meters into the top left corner right at the start and gave Real a dream start. With the lead behind them, Alonso’s team was in control, but after a good half hour Atletico also had chances.

But Real were successful again: Valverde sent Rodrygo, who gave Jan Oblak no chance in the Atletico goal. Because Sörloth responded almost immediately, a thrilling final phase developed.

Barcelona stormed into the final on Wednesday. Flick’s team shot Champions League participants Athletic Bilbao out of the stadium 5-0 (4-0).
