The storm “Elli” is putting several regions of Germany on alert. The Bundesliga clubs are also watching closely. As things stand, one game is on the brink.

Concern about the weather chaos feared in Germany has also reached the Bundesliga clubs. At least the German Football League (DFL) is monitoring the situation very closely. “The DFL is alarmed,” said a DFL spokesman when asked by the German Press Agency. “All games are currently taking place.”

Especially in the north, the situation is being reassessed every day. On Saturday, Werder Bremen and FC St. Pauli will host their opponents in the afternoon, and Union Berlin will also play. The German Weather Service is predicting extreme weather conditions with heavy snowfall for Friday. It will be particularly uncomfortable from Friday night onwards, when storm “Elli” takes over.

FC St. Pauli initially informed t-online that they were waiting to see how the weather situation developed. “We are currently developing different scenarios in order to be able to act and are in constant communication with everyone involved,” it said.

However, they are no longer quite as optimistic that the game can be played: “Given the weather conditions, we cannot guarantee that the game can take place under the given circumstances,” the club wrote on its homepage two days before the game against Leipzig.

There is probably no danger for the opening game on Friday evening. Eintracht Frankfurt welcomes Borussia Dortmund, where the situation is less critical. “According to the assessment of the responsible authorities, there is currently no reason to assume that the game on Friday cannot take place as planned,” said Eintracht. “Through the stadium operator, we have deployed additional staff as a precautionary measure to clear snowfall, carry out gritting measures and ensure safety on the stadium site.”
