Bas Smit supports the substantive criticism of Antoinnette Scheulderman’s program, in which he himself was one of the interview guests. At least, that’s what Tina Nijkamp says. “It’s actually true.”

It has been a turbulent New Year’s Eve for Antoinnette Scheulderman, because she appeared during the holidays with a downright ridiculous program in which she tickled the egos of quite narcissistic celebrities such as Bas Smit and Sylvie Meis by asking what exactly their success smells like. The title? The Smell of Success. Cringing television.

What does Tina think?

Johan Derksen was really fierce about this ratings flop and touched a nerve with Antoinnette, who then went wild on the social media like a real hysteric. What does Tina Nijkamp think? “What do I think of it? I of course watched The Smell of Success and I didn’t think the format was well put together from a technical perspective.”

She continues in the podcast Tina’s TV Update: “That has to do with the fact that the makers – the creator is Marco Versluis, the former editor-in-chief of De Wereld Draait Door and a very nice guy by the way – made a mistake in terms of format. Success is confused with wealth. That is of course not the case.”

Marriage or inheritance

Sylvie owes her success to the fact that she was a football wife and Bas’ success has more to do with luck than talent. So being rich just happened to them. “You are not successful because you are rich. You can also become rich through marriage or inheritance. Being successful has little to do with wealth,” says Tina.

“I think they have not explained this enough and no critical questions have been asked about it. I think that is a shame. If you are rich, achieving success is a lot easier, because, for example, you have influential friends or you can get close to an influential network. It is a shame that these are confused with each other.”

Poorly viewed

According to Tina, the viewer also punished it terribly. “It was viewed very poorly. 250, 260, 270 thousand people linearly. Including delayed viewing, it did not exceed 500 thousand viewers. That is not good for prime time on NPO 1. That is of course very sad for Antoinnette Scheulderman.”

The criticism is therefore widely shared. “I received a lot of DMs about it saying that people thought that was more important, that success was interspersed too much with wealth. Even Bas Smit responded to this and he said: ‘What you say is actually correct. Of course, being successful does not equal being rich and vice versa.’ I think that’s a shame in terms of format.”

Bas and Sylvie

Antoinette should have provided more variety, Tina thinks. “I think that both a Bas Smit and a Sylvie Meis are too similar. I think you should also have included people who are successful in a different way.”

She concludes: “I think it would be very wise if Antoinnette were a guest at VI. Then she can explain her side of the story.”
