American actor Steven W. Bailey has publicly opened up about his health condition on the messaging service X.

– I have spent years being careful, private and quiet about something that has shaped my life and work, the star writes in X.

– That time is over.

Bailey says that more than five years ago, he was diagnosed with a rare congenital myasthenic syndrome, or CMS. It is a hereditary disease in which the communication between nerves and muscles is disturbed. It causes muscle weakness and rapid fatigue.

– Here’s the thing: my muscles are clearly not getting all the commands from my brain to do all the cool things that muscles are supposed to do. It’s tiring, the star says in her update.

According to the actor, his hands and feet get tired faster than usual. Repetitive movements are especially difficult for him. He jokes about how the disease has freed him from housework.

However, the biggest headache is moving.

– I am lucky that at the moment I can still walk around the block with the dog, move around my house, stop by the store to pick up a few quick purchases and the like on foot. The truth is that as my illness has progressed, I’ve been using an electric wheelchair more and more to get around, he admits.

The illness has affected the star’s career significantly. In the future, he is likely to do more roles where he will be seen in a wheelchair.

– I am hopeful that there is still room for me in this field, which I love. I am looking forward to performing as characters who live their lives with a chair so that I can create a more diverse representation in the film and television world, he hopes.
