There are people who seem to dominate time and Carolina Kopelioff is one of them. Within a year he played central characters in the second seasons of “Máxima” and “En el Barro”, participated in the audiovisual version of “Catedrales”, a famous novel by Claudia Piñeiro, returned to “Soy Luna” for the final farewell and starred in “Cautiva”, a strong series that delves into the hells of a religious order promising an anthological duel between Caro and Lorena Vega. Meanwhile, she continued to take the stage with the cult work “Un tira cada uno”, she was part of “The whale” alongside Julio Chávez and played the sweet Nina in “La Gaviota” alongside Muriel Santa Ana and Diego Cremonesi at the Teatro San Martín, a play that will resume its performances in February. Additionally, he took a long time to chat in this interview. How many hours are there in Kopelioff’s days? That is an enigma that only love for the craft can solve.
News: You are the protagonist of “Cautiva” and there you play a girl who decides to be a cloistered nun with undesired consequences. In a very short time, the Spanish film “Los Domingos”, Rosalía’s new album, “La Mesías”, and another series about Opus Dei that Lucía Puenzo will direct coincided. Is there a return of religion as a theme?
Carolina Kopelioff: It is true that religion did not seem like a topic that was going around and suddenly it was resurrected (laughs). When I started rehearsing for “Cautiva,” they just named me for the film “Los Domingos” where Juan Minujín works. I know it generated a lot of conversation and won the San Sebastián Festival, it hasn’t premiered here yet, but I want to see it. I think it’s great to shed light on these worlds like the closure, about which much is not known, no one knows much about what happens inside. The case on which the series focuses is very particular and, obviously, luckily not all spaces are full of this domination and abuse, but I think it is important to give visibility to the issue and tell that these things happen.
News: Does your character voluntarily enter the Order and then not be able to leave?
Kopelioff: That’s right, it is based on the real case of a girl who, at the age of 18, decides to enter a cloistered convent of nuns and in very complex circumstances they keep her kidnapped there for 14 years. She just managed to get out at 32 and finds herself with an area of her life that she needs to recover. She is very beaten in more ways than one and pursues the search for justice for the abuses she experienced. It is an incredible story, told by spectacular directors like Paula Hernández and Jazmín Stuart and with very clever colleagues.
News: HBO Max recently anticipated its 2026 premieres, among which is “Cautiva”, and we were able to see a Lorena Vega nun who would not exactly be Sister Teresa of Calcutta…
Kopelioff: (We laugh) Lore, who is a brilliant actress, a sweetheart, has to play the convent’s torturer! There is a beautiful cast: Valeria Lois plays my mother, Tomás Wicz plays one of my brothers and, as if that were not enough, there is Rochi Hernández, Rita Cortese, Julieta Zylberberg… I love them all very much.
News: While you were talking about Lorena Vega, I thought that both of them will be in the new season of “In the mud” and you also did the second of “Máxima”. Shall we play some pesos on number 2?
Kopelioff: And, it could be (laughs) “In the mud” was already filmed a year ago, in fact, when they called me to the casting of “Máxima”, I had just finished recording, it seems incredible, but both are finally going to be released in 2026. In the series “In the mud” I play the daughter of Vero Llinás’ character. We are in another pavilion, crossing a lot with China Suárez, and I also have something strong with L-Gante. I tell it because they already said it there.
News: Delfina Chaves told me that when she saw you enter the Dutch set it was like seeing a glimpse of her beloved people from Buenos Aires in the Netherlands.
Kopelioff: How gorgeous! It was something very special, traveling to film, knowing something new is very enriching and quite different from everything else. Sometimes you had to shoot in somewhat improvised places and suddenly you are there sharing with the entire Dutch team and thinking “How did I get here?” We filmed in locations that are incredible, dreamlike, it was a very enriching experience, filming outside has its difficulties, including the language. I remember that with Delfina it was: “Oh, it’s nice to talk in Spanish for a while, relax a little!” Those moments together were a recreation.
News: This year, in addition, you shared two works with Muriel Santa Ana, the series “Catedrales”, which recently finished filming, and “La Gaviota” at the Teatro San Martín. Before they had already crossed paths in “Cro-Magnon”; Is an invisible thread connecting them or what?
Kopelioff: (Laughs) I’ll tell you more: what you still don’t know is that in “Cathedrals” we play the same character; Her name is Marcela. I am the version of you from the past. That’s very crazy! The series is based on the novel by Claudia Piñeiro, it is a book that I loved, I devoured it, we filmed a lot in Chile and we also met again with Fabiana Tiscornia who was one of the directors of “Cromañón”. In this profession one crosses paths everywhere but with Muriel there is something inexplicable, life brings us together, I love her and admire her, she is a unique companion and now with the experience of having shared the stage I tell you that I love her much more.
News: Nina’s monologue in “La Gaviota” is one of the most beautiful texts ever written and any young actress dreams of doing it. Once, María Onetto told me that this was her pending performance, unfortunately, she couldn’t interpret it, but you could, what did you feel?
Kopelioff: Wow, a lot of things! Nina is a character that actresses dream of, there is something about that final monologue that touches us closely. All of us in some class wanted to do it, no one is able to resist trying that text, so it generated enormous emotion in me and also a great responsibility. Doing Chekhov in the Casacuberta Hall of the San Martín, directed by Rubén Szuchmacher, is a serious thing. On the one hand, I approached the work with great respect, but it was also moving to do it every night. There was something very special in the production, it was an extremely delicate approach with special care in the words, the director Rubén Szuchmacher has that, he honors every period, every comma, he is very perfectionist with language and that is very important for me too. It was a learning experience based on passion and, luckily, in February we will return with new functions. Do you know who gave me the news that it was going to be Nina?
News: Give me clues, does it start with Muriel and end with Santa Ana?
Kopelioff: Yeah! (we laugh) I participated in a workshop that was held at the San Martín to cover the roles of the young cast, so we were trying out all the characters and you start to realize that you are still moving forward, but you don’t know which character you are going to get. I remember that I was in a taxi and suddenly Muriel sent me a message saying: “Now they are going to call you from the theater, but I wanted to give you the news that you are going to be Nina.” That was very beautiful. I felt indescribable joy, but also mortal fear, it was inevitable.
News: Let’s move on to another Nina, your character in “Soy Luna”, because I don’t want to say goodbye without solving this mystery. When did you have time to film the new season? The year has 365 days, Caro
Kopelioff: (Laughs) The truth is that this year was crazy! “Soy Luna” was made because during these years the public never stopped asking for a new season and it was an unforgettable experience, I am in all the episodes and they condensed the recording times for me, so I could do it between jobs. For me it was the closure of something that meant a lot to all of us, a reunion and the farewell that we deserved. “Soy Luna” is the symbol of another stage of life that was recorded forever, we shared our adolescence, we grew up with people, we performed in different countries, we filled stadiums. I swear that there is not a day that I do not receive a comment from “Soy Luna” or a photo from the series, getting together to relive all that and value it even more was spectacular.
