Sudan initially leads in the first round of 16. Then the Senegal team turns the game around. A Bayern striker is also involved – but he is still criticized.

Munich’s Nicolas Jackson can continue to hope for a second triumph at the Africa Cup with Senegal. The co-favorite moved into the quarter-finals of the tournament in Morocco with a 3-1 (2-1) win over Sudan. After Aamir Abdallah went behind (6th minute), Pape Alassane Gueye (29th/45th+3) turned the game in Senegal’s favor at half-time with two goals. Ibrahim Mbaye (77th) decided the game in Tangier.

This means that Jackson will continue to be missing from FC Bayern for the time being. The next opponent on Friday is Mali, who beat Tunisia 3-2 on penalties after an early sending off. After late goals in normal playing time, the score was 1:1 (1:1, 0:0) after extra time.

Sudan took the lead with their first good action. Abdallah flicked the ball with his left, out of reach, high into the far corner. Even after that, the outsiders remained dangerous in their advances, while the Senegalese team tried to equalize.

Former Bayern professional Sadio Mané didn’t hit the ball correctly in a promising position and his attempt went over the goal (16th). Jackson then had the best chance to make it 1-1, but was denied by Sudan’s goalkeeper Monged Elneel (29′). The scene was not well received by their own fans.

On social media, followers scoffed: “Anyone who still believes in Nicolas Jackson is obviously into toxic relationships” and “Big players require killers. Nicolas Jackson isn’t one,” wrote users. Shortly afterwards, Gueye shot a low shot from the edge of the penalty area to make it 1-1. After a pass from Jackson, Gueye took the lead again with a direct shot.

Jackson, who had recently been warned, was substituted in the 53rd minute. Progression was no longer in great danger, Mbaye, who had just been substituted, scored the third goal after a counterattack.
