The German team around Alexander Zverev celebrated a clear victory against the Netherlands at the United Cup at the start of the tennis year.

Led by the world number three, the selection won 3-0 in Sydney. Zverev won his singles 7:5, 6:0 against Tallon Griekspoor. Eva Lys had previously won 6:2, 6:2 against Suzan Lamens. At the end, Zverev and Laura Siegemund also scored the third point in the mixed doubles against Griekspoor and Demi Schuurs 6:3, 6:2.

Griekspoor has no chance against Zverev

After a balanced start, Zverev took the first set with a break at 6:5. The 28-year-old clearly dominated in the second round, only giving up seven points and giving his opponent no chance. “In the first set it was difficult to find the rhythm”said Zverev. “When I got my chances, I made good use of them. I’m very happy with the win.” He didn’t want to draw many conclusions yet with a view to the Australian Open in Melbourne (January 18th to February 1st), “Because there weren’t many long rallies and not really much rhythm, but a win is a win”.

Eva Lys “straight” to success

Eva Lys had already taken the German lead with a 6:2, 6:2 win against Suzan Lamens. The 23-year-old celebrated a successful United Cup debut and also fought through minor problems. “I played pretty straight and not too aggressively. I think that was the key to success”said Lys.

In the group phase of the team competition, the German selection will face last year’s finalist Poland with second in the world rankings Iga Swiatek on Monday. The winners of the six groups of three and the best runner-up from each of the three groups in Sydney and Perth make it to the quarter-finals. Germany won the 2024 United Cup.
