How do you lose all those extra pounds from overeaten oliebollen and leftovers from Christmas? Well, by going for a nice swim. How about the traditional New Year’s dive? There are plenty of places where you can cool off in Drenthe.
If you haven’t heard enough carbide or fireworks explosions yet, you can indulge yourself in the Klinkenvlierse Plas near Coevorden. There, at 2 p.m., a literal starting signal is given for the New Year’s dive using a real cannon. The proceeds from this dive will go to Action Jeugdsportkamp, which offers a sports camp to young people aged 12 to 17 with a physical disability or multiple disabilities.
There are also New Year’s dives in De Wijk, Erm, Nijstad, Ieberenplas, Annerveenschekanaal, Nieuw-Weerdinge and Hoornseplas, among others. The New Year’s dive in Nijeveen is cancelled. It would be on the ice rink, but appropriately enough there is too much on ice to make a splash.
There is no New Year’s dive in the Kibbelkoele this year. This has recently been pumped out and Staatsbosbeheer reports that there is not yet enough water in it on January 1. The recreational lake in Noord-Sleen is emptied every six years for a major cleaning. The lake fills itself again with groundwater.
