Boxing star Anthony Joshua was involved in a car accident that left two people dead. Now it is clear: these were two of his trainers.

It is now clear who it was: Joshua’s athletic trainer Sina Ghami and Kevin “Latif” Ayodele died in the accident. Manager Eddie Hearn confirmed this on Instagram: “Anthony Joshua was involved in a traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria earlier today. It is with deep sadness that it is confirmed that two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, have tragically died.”

The accident occurred on Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Shagamu town, the Nigerian Road Safety Commission (FRSC) had earlier said. Joshua was sitting in a Lexus SUV with four other people when the vehicle collided with a parked truck. The 36-year-old was sitting in the back seat and was slightly injured.

Hearn continued: “Anthony […] was taken to hospital for examination and treatment. He is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation.” The team also asked for privacy for the victims’ families.

Internet star Jake Paul, against whom Joshua stood in the ring shortly before Christmas and won, also commented on

Joshua himself published an Instagram story on Monday morning in which he can be seen playing table tennis with Ayodele. It is unclear when the recordings were made. In his story, Ghami showed a Mitsubishi vehicle located in “Lagos, Nigeria.” According to British media, this may have been part of Joshua’s convoy.

Authorities say excessive speed and dangerous overtaking were the cause of the accident. The driver therefore lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the stationary truck. Joshua was on vacation in his parents’ home country at the time of the accident.
