Germany’s World Cup group opponents Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) missed their second victory in the second group game at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The defending champions drew 1-1 (0-0) with Cameroon in the top duel in Group F and, like their opponents, are not yet guaranteed to reach the round of 16.

Amad Konan (51′) gave the Ivorians the lead in an entertaining game, only five minutes later Cameroon countered in Marrakesh in front of the spectators Kylian Mbappé through Junior Tchamadeu (56′).

For the Ivorians, shooting star Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig was once again in the starting line-up, while Leverkusen’s Christian Kofane started on the Cameroon side, whose shot was directed onto the crossbar by Yahia Fofana in the 22nd minute.

The German national soccer team also has to play in the second game of the 2026 World Cup against the three-time African champions Ivory Coast. The “elephants” were “among the best this continent has to offer,” DFB sports director Rudi Völler recently said.

Gabon, with former Bundesliga top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (36), had previously lost 2:3 (1:2) in the basement duel in Group F on Sunday against outsiders Mozambique, who thus achieved their first ever win at an African Championship. Gabon is still without a point.
