The unit of measurement of the health of sport is represented by victories. And Italy is in good shape because it is in sixth place in the overall medal table of the 2025 World Cup in the competitions that will be part of the program of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. A placing that improves on the ninth place at the 2024 Paris Games when the Azzurri won 40 medals (12 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze). This season the world podiums of our athletes were 41 (13 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze) with some highlights never achieved before such as the double triumph of volleyball, men’s and women’s world champion.

dominance in tennis

It was also a fabulous year for tennis which, however, will not contribute to the 2025 medal table because it has no world championships. It is the sport that, after giving us the gold of Paolini-Errani in the women’s doubles and the bronze of Musetti in the men’s singles in Paris, continues its boom driven by the exploits of Jannik Sinner: he won his golds in the Slams in Melbourne and above all in Wimbledon, the first Italian ever. In 2025 we won the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup – which are a sort of team world championship – and we were the only country capable of fielding at least one representative in all four Finals, in the men’s and women’s singles and doubles.

athletics and swimming

Athletics is also flying and it couldn’t be otherwise given that the strongest long runner in the world is Mattia Furlani. At the age of twenty he even won two world gold medals, indoors and outdoors, and his feat in Tokyo gave strength and substance to an expedition capable of winning seven medals. Almost a quarter of the 2025 world championship podiums came from swimming which, between pool and cross-country, brought one gold, six silvers and two bronzes. Italy is among the superpowers and does not fear comparison with the world that has gathered in this splendid assembly of champions.

sports globalization

The geography of sport has changed, everything goes faster. And there are no more Cinderellas. A message that arrived, loud and clear, precisely at Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024 where more than ninety countries medaled (93 in Japan and 91 in France), never so many in Olympic history. But there’s more, the number of national teams with at least one Olympian in the medal table has also increased: in 2021 there were 65, 63 in 2024. The process of globalization of sport is progressing quickly. The most striking example comes from fencing, whose Olympic medal table is made up of three-quarters of Italy, France, Hungary and Russia. At the Grand Palais, the latest Olympic semi-finals of men’s saber and women’s épée saw male and female athletes from eight different countries on the stage. In addition to the leading nations of Italy, France and Hungary (with Russia absent from the Games) also Egypt, Tunisia, South Korea, Estonia and Hong Kong for a total of three continents represented. In sports where they once dominated, now they have to fight. We have the technical and human resources to amaze and amaze us again. And 2025 told us that in sport we remain a model and are among the reference nations.
