Owls
There are six species of owls in the Netherlands: the tawny owl, long-eared owl, short-eared owl, barn owl, little owl and eagle owl. These owls differ considerably in appearance and behavior, but they are all nocturnal. They live in forests, open fields and even in buildings around Zoetermeer. Groups of long-eared owls are sometimes seen near the Buyten Park and a little owl is regularly seen in the Nieuwe Driemanspolder.
For example, the tawny owl lives mainly in forests and parks, the barn owl around churches and buildings, and the long-eared owl in open landscapes with some trees. The little owl is mainly found on farms, while the short-eared owl mainly lives in open fields and swamps. The eagle owl, the largest owl of the bunch, lives in rocky areas and on steep slopes.
