The Australian Open starts in Melbourne in mid-January. But the fans have to do without a star player.

British tennis player Jack Draper has canceled his participation in the Australian Open in January. The reason for this is a persistent injury to his left hitting arm, which has not allowed him to return to the court since the US Open in August. Draper shared his decision on social media, emphasizing the difficulty of this choice.

Jack Draper, who won his first Masters title in Indian Wells in March, will miss the first Grand Slam tournament of the new tennis season in Melbourne. The 24-year-old explained that he was at the end of the healing process, but jumping straight into the intense best-of-five matches was not a wise decision. “It’s a really, really hard decision,” Draper said on social media.

He hasn’t played a game since the US Open in August. Draper had meanwhile reached number four in the world rankings and was considered an up-and-coming talent in international tennis. His cancellation is a setback both for him personally and for his fans who were hoping for his comeback.
