The deadly clashes occurred in Piedmont and Emilia Romagna. Two elderly men lost their lives. In both cases, the driver of the car did not stop

Two pedestrians hit by as many cars and killed in separate incidents. In both cases, the driver did not stop to help. The first accident is in Casalgrande, in the province of Reggio Emilia, the second in Leini in the Turin area.

Reggio Emilia

The Casalgrande clash occurred around 11pm on Tuesday 23 December. The one who lost his life was a 76-year-old man who had taken to the street to throw away rubbish when he was hit by a car which continued on. The police confirmed the death of the elderly man and, thanks to the debris left on the asphalt, set out on the trail of the investor. Shortly afterwards, a 43-year-old woman accompanied by her lawyer showed up at the barracks to admit her responsibilities, claiming that she had run away because she was panicked. The police reported her at liberty for the crime of vehicular homicide with escape.

Turin

In Leini the accident occurred on the night between 24 and 25 December, around 2.30 am. In this case the victim was 75 years old. According to initial reconstructions, the car hit the elderly man returning from midnight mass and dragged him for about thirty metres, then drove away. The health workers from the green cross of Villastellone and the carabinieri intervened on site and started a search for the driver. The car that escaped was a gray Fiat Punto.

Two deaths which confirm the fact that among the categories of road users, pedestrians are the most vulnerable, as certified by Istat and Aci. In 2024, the latest year available, for every hundred accidents involving a person moving on foot there will be 2.5 deaths. This figure, called the mortality rate, is four times higher than that of car occupants (0.6) and in any case higher than that of motorcyclists (1.5) and cyclists or scooter users (1.1). Also in 2024 alone in Italy, pedestrians who lost their lives in road collisions were 470 (almost 1.3 per day) with a decrease of 3.1% compared to the previous year but with absolute numbers that will remain almost constant from 2021. In total in 2024, 3,030 people lost their lives in road collisions in the country with a decrease of 0.3% compared to 2023. The number of injured instead it was 233,853 (+4.1%), for a total of 173,364 accidents (+4.1%).
