King Charles gave his third televised Christmas speech today.
Televised Christmas speeches have a long tradition in Britain, as Queen Elizabeth gave one as early as 1957. Elizabeth died in September 2022, so after her, King Charles has given the Christmas speech.

Now it was the turn of Charles’ third Christmas speech, and the viewers were disappointed in at least one thing. Many will surely remember how Elisabet gave her speech sitting at the table, and in many years the table was decorated with photos of important people to Elisabet.
He gave his last Christmas speech in 2021, and then there was a touching picture of Elizabeth and her spouse Prince Philip in the foreground of the table. Philip had died in the spring of that year. Elisabet’s jewelry, which she had worn on her honeymoon in 1947, also aroused admiration.
This year, as in previous years, Charles did not have any photographs or anything personal on display, as some had expected.
Elisabet often had photos of her loved ones on display. The picture is from 2021, when the Queen gave her last speech.
The speech was pre-filmed in a chapel at Westminster Abbey.
In his speech, the king called for “compassion and reconciliation, at a time when the world is divided”.
The 77-year-old king said he finds it “very encouraging” that people of different faiths have a “common desire for peace”.
– With the great diversity of our communities, we can ensure that the right wins the wrong. It seems to me that we need to uphold the values of compassion and reconciliation as our Lord lived and died, Charles said.
The king also instructed to disconnect from phones and other devices so that “souls can be renewed”.
